Guatemala'da göstericilerin ateşe verdiği kongre binası

Devlet Başkanı Giammattei göstericileri binaları tahrip etmekten kaçınmaya çağırarak şiddet uygulayanların en sert şekilde cezalandırılacağını açıkladı. Kongre merkezine birkaç yüz metre mesafede bulunan Plaza de la Constitucion'da düzenlenen diğer bir barışçıl protesto gösterisi ise olaysız sonuçlandı.
2021 bütçesi gerilimi artırdı
Çarşamba sabahı Guatemala Kongresi 2021 yılı ulusal bütçe tasarısını onayladı. Bütçede COVID-19 hastalarının bakımı, eğitim, insan hakları için mücadele, yetersiz beslenmeye karşı mücadele için fonlarda kesintiye gidildiği için halk, Kongre tarafından onaylanan 12,7 milyar dolarlık bütçeye karşı çıktı.
Protesters gathered in the historical center of Guatemala City, where the National Palace of Culture is located, demanding the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei due to cuts in education and health services in the national budget for 2021. A group of activists who wanted the budget to be vetoed broke into the Congress building with stones and sticks. Demonstrators entering the congress building clashed with the police. While the police took the demonstrators out of the building in a short time, the firemen put out the flames.
Police used tear gas to disperse protesters. During the conflict, many firefighters and journalists were taken to hospitals after being poisoned by the gas used by the police.
President Giammattei urged demonstrators to refrain from destroying buildings, saying that those who commit violence will be punished in the harshest way. "I reiterate that you have the right to demonstrate in accordance with the law. But we cannot allow you to harm public or private property. Anyone who has been proven to participate in these criminal acts will feel the full weight of the law," said Giammattei.
Another peaceful protest held in Plaza de la Constitucion, a few hundred meters from the congress center, ended without incident.
2021 budget increased tension
On Wednesday morning, the Guatemala Congress approved the national budget bill for 2021. The public opposed the $ 12.7 billion budget approved by Congress, as the budget cuts funds for the care of COVID-19 patients, education, the fight for human rights, and the fight against malnutrition.
